Dear Minister,

I am writing to you today to express my deep concern about the recent decision by the Government of Ontario to cancel 758 renewable energy contracts.

This misguided choice undermines the efforts of so many Ontarians to use locally-generated renewable energy. People installed solar panels not only to do their part in fighting climate change, but also because they thought they could rely on the provincial government’s support.

Equally concerning, this irresponsible step will mean the loss of thousands of jobs across the province and will put in jeopardy small businesses that are international leaders in renewable industries.

Ontarians rely on these projects to keep our air clean and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for our kids and for generations to come. In your news release, you claimed that the government will protect “consumers from any costs incurred from the cancellation”. In fact, your actions will cost the consumer more, in irreversible changes to our climate and to our economy. Hundreds of communities, including schools and Indigenous groups, would have huge benefits from the renewable energy contracts your government cancelled.

Unfortunately, this is not the only concerning change that your government has made in recent weeks. When you cancelled the Green Ontario program, hundreds of businesses and families were left scrambling to get their environmentally-friendly retrofits done. Your government cancelled the rebate program for electric cars and fired Ontario’s Chief Scientist.

I urge you to reconsider these decisions, and ask that you reinstate these programs immediately. Ontario is a forward-looking, innovative province. Our communities and businesses deserve a government that invests in them, and in the benefits of renewable energy.

I hope that this government will do what is right, and take action to protect our environment, our jobs, and our businesses.

Respectfully,

Wendy L. Johnston
