Gratitude and thanks

The Beach United community is so fortunate to have talented people who support our ministry in many ways. One of those is Kim Echlin and I would like thank Kim for sharing with us a reading of her new book earlier this year. Now we are thrilled to congratulate her on winning the 2021 Toronto Book Award for “Speak Silence”.

The 2021 Toronto Book Awards’ volunteer jury described Echlin's novel as a story of tragedy and community rebuilding. In the story, a Toronto journalist travels to war-torn Europe to reunite with her former lover and report on a festival in Sarajevo. What she finds is a network of women determined to move beyond their country’s shame. In an impeccably well-researched text, Echlin portrays the horrors of the Bosnian war through the stories of systemic sexual assault in three generations of a Muslim family with prose that portrays both horror and hope.

As we approach the Thanksgiving weekend, it is important to remember that we can hold the pains of this world with love. We can choose to build hope as we express gratitude for blessings received, whilst also being agents for change in the world.

On this day we say
this day we say
this day we say
this day we are released
into God’s keeping
and held
in gladness and love. —Jan Richardson

With gratitude and thanks,
Karen Dale, in ministry with Beach United Church
