Forty Days & Forty Nights
The biblical expression “40 days and 40 nights” means a really long time; it is a metaphor rather than an exact measure.
The 40 days of Lent are an acknowledgement of Jesus’ time in the desert. This story is found in Matthew chapters 3 & 4. Just as Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days, many Christians do the same during Lent, in remembrance. However the season of Lent is longer than forty days and that’s because the six Sundays are not included in the count!
During Lent 2021 you are encouraged to add more plant based foods into your diet. This is a spiritual discipline which helps us to play an active part in caring for the earth by reducing our carbon foot-print.
As we eat more plant based dishes, the amount of meat we eat will decrease. The “fasting” aspect of this challenge relates to eliminating meat, particularly beef, from our diets.
We will post recipes, take-out restaurants which serve vegan/vegetarian dishes and recommendations of plant-based foods you can buy from your local grocery store.
