The perks of membership
What membership cards do you have tucked away in your purse or wallet? These days you might well be choosing not to go to the gym and perhaps even your library card is languishing un-used as you download your books.

Becoming a member of the United Church of Canada is not a pre-requisite for being active in a local congregation such as Beach United. You can join groups, attend worship and enjoy concerts; all without showing a membership card! Of course at the moment many of these activities have moved on-line.

So why was I so excited when Lynne Barger asked to join the church? After all Lynne has been an integral part of BUC for years; she has not been able to make coffee on a Sunday morning lately but she has been helping out in the garden. I think it has to do with that line in the creed “we are not alone”. Caring, supportive community which holds at its heart the "divine spark"; is a perk which comes with very few other memberships.

On Tuesday September 22 at 11 am Lynne was supported by her friends, Sally Evans, Marian Hilton, Rosalie Bradley and me; as she made promises and officially became a member of BUC. There was not a membership card but she did get a very impressive looking certificate :)

Blessings, Karen Dale [in ministry with Beach United Church]

P.S. Don Murray sends his thanks for all the best wishes people sent for his 90th birthday. He called it "an outpouring of love".
