Poverty can happen very quickly to anyone. A guaranteed livable income would help address the persistent inequities within our country.

From the Social & Ecological Justice Commission, Shining Waters Regional Council:

On Thursday, April 8, at 12.30 p.m. on the eve of the Liberal National Convention, The United Church of Canada will be inviting Canadians across the country to light a candle in support of a guaranteed livable income, often referred to as the guaranteed basic income. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of health and well-being of the entire community and exposed the cracks in the current economic situation. Building on the positive experience of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), this is a unique opportunity to make an important policy change to ensure greater income security for all Canadians.

Plan to light a candle, take a picture, and post it to social media (#UCCanlivableincome, #guaranteedlivableincome #basicincome #SWRC). You can also tag Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (@justinpjtrudeau) and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland (Instagram @chrystiafreeland and Facebook @freelandchrystia).

If you are not a social media user, take a photo and email it to Bri-anne Swan, bswan@united-church.ca. Feel free to include a note. Bri-anne will post your photos to the Regional Council’s social media pages.
